Match Intro
GRPL’s South Africa series steps up another level as Jaun faces Bokang in Choke-Only Submission Wrestling — a matchup between two decorated national wrestling champions, with Bokang becoming the first professional MMA fighter to compete in a GRPL match.
From our European base, GRPL travelled to South Africa to find new combat talent and different styles for our unique ruleset. This matchup delivers exactly that. Jaun is a 13-time national wrestling champion with amateur MMA and grappling experience. Bokang brings an even deeper competitive résumé: 23 national wrestling titles and professional MMA experience at ONE Championship.
That makes this one of the strongest wrestling matchups we have put under the GRPL rules so far.
Bokang normally competes at flyweight in professional MMA and entered this match significantly lighter than Jaun. Jaun brings the bigger frame, while Bokang brings elite competitive wrestling experience and the composure of someone already competing professionally on an international MMA stage.
But GRPL changes the objective completely.
This is not a traditional wrestling match, and it is not an MMA fight. Under Choke-Only Submission Wrestling rules, takedowns, pressure and control can create opportunities, but none of them score by themselves. Every exchange ultimately has to lead toward the neck.
The match is fought over 1 round of 7 minutes. Every successful choke scores 1 point, followed by a reset. The fighter with the most points after regulation wins. If the score is tied after 7 minutes, both fighters take a short break before continuing into Golden Score, where the first successful choke decides the match.
For Jaun, this is a chance to test his wrestling and MMA experience against the most accomplished opponent in this South Africa series.
For Bokang, the challenge is completely different from professional MMA. There are no strikes to create openings, no wrestling points to protect, and no positional score to fall back on. His 23 national wrestling titles have to be translated into a game where the only thing that matters is finishing the choke.
There is also a clear physical contrast. Jaun enters as the considerably bigger fighter, while Bokang has to rely on timing, movement, technique and years of high-level competition to deal with that size difference.
Between them, Jaun and Bokang bring 36 national wrestling titles onto the GRPL mat.
One is the bigger fighter.
The other is the first professional MMA athlete to step into GRPL.
